To me, it would see detrimental to return an error when the property is not supported. I would expect the service to omit the property from the response, similar to how it omits unsupported properties when $select is not used; that "shall" statement you're highlighting conflicts with this. We may need to discuss this further internally.

Thanks very much Mike. I thought that might have been your intention, but at the same time--as you note--it did appear to contradict the "specifications as written".
Please be assured that I'm motivated only by attempting to maximise the chances of our services interoperting properly with those of other vendors, rather than trying to pick holes in the spec....
